Paragraph breaks let us get a feel for when the conversation switches from one person to the next, but the book has no punctuation to indicate the difference between a character's thoughts and their words. There are no quotation marks in this book. ![]() More than one occasion saw me going back re-reading paragraphs over to understand either who was talking or who was being talked about. On a technical level, the writing is poor. I had even less interest in reading "Our Souls at Night" after finishing the first few chapters. I read it because it's my wife's favorite book, and because she agreed to read GRRM's "The Hedge Knight" in return. Huge worlds, magic, complex plots, mysteries, hundreds of named characters. I read very little, but when I do it's epic-world fantasy and scifi like ASOIAF and The Dark Tower. When I first heard about this book, I could not have been less interested.
